What Is Certification?
Certification should not be confused with Professional
Registration. Professional Registration is a licensing process conducted
by individual states which grant to the engineer the right to practice
engineering in that state. It is generally designated in a broad
area representing one of the traditional engineering disciplines.
Motion Control certification on the other hand, is granted by the
Association of International Motion Engineers, denoting expertise
in the specialty of motion control. It, however, holds no legal
responsibility for either party, nor does it imply that you are
an engineer.
Is there any conflict between Certification and
Registration? None. Registered Professional Engineers are urged
to become Certified to define their area of expertise, while Certified
Motion Control Specialists are urged to take the examination for
registration as a Professional Engineer to obtain a legal license
to practice engineering (registration requirements vary from state
to state).
Why Become Certified?
The purpose of Certification is to document academic
and practical experience in motion control. Certification also encourages
you to upgrade skills and update knowledge so you can keep abreast
of the current and future state-of-the-art. Thus, you can maintain,
as well as measure and document your expertise by qualifying for
Certifications.
As established by the Board
of Directors of the Association of International Motion Engineers
(AiME) and with the approval of the General Membership as of May
24, 1994, Certification offers the following benefits:
- Documentation of your knowledge and expertise
- Access to courses, seminars, workshops,
etc., designed for personal development
- Incentive to continue your education and
maintain competence in the field
- Recognition in the eyes of your colleagues
and employer
- Credentials of competence in the form
of a wall certificate and wall I.D. card
- Use CMCS after your name to indicate professional
competence
- And you most important, it makes you more
valuable to your employer, perhaps aiding your professional advancement
CREDIBILITY.
It is vital to AiME that CMCS certification maintain
its intended credibility by our insisting on high standards. Anyone
obtaining certification should be recognized as having been selected
by your peers as having achieved special status in the motion control
industry.
How Long Is My Certificate Good For?
Your certification is an indication of your continuing
education and the resulting upgrading of your knowledge of motion
control. Certification is renewable every three years by showing
evidence of continuing education activities such as additional college
work, short courses, seminars, workshops, tutorials, specific technical
training, and AiME sponsored technology transfer events.
You are required to take 24 hours over the three
year period and to pay a $30 (USD) renewal fee.
Upon certification you will receive:
- A wall certificate
- A wallet ID card
- A set of recertification forms and instructions
- A 10% discount at future AiME sponsored
educational seminars
- Upon your approval, AiME will notify your
employer and local newspaper of your achievement
Is AiME Membership Required?
No. A candidate does not have to be a member of AiME to become
a Certified Motion Control Specialist or Certified Technical Sales
Specialist. Certification does not automatically make you a member,
and membership does not mean you are certified.
