Course 15:

SERVO FEEDBACK DEVICES

HOURS: 2.5

SCOPE: This course reviews the basic sensors used in modern motion systems.  It will cover accuracy, effective operating ranges and each and how to decide which to use in a specific motion problem.  A practical example illustrating the implementation of sensor arrays along with interfacing and signal conditioning requirements will be reviewed in depth.  Finally, a discussion of distributed motion control and smart sensors will give a flavor of motion sensor trends.

OUTLINE:

  • State variables
    • Motion variables (position, velocity, acceleration, torque)
    • Non-motion variables (temperature, level tilt,...)
  • Physical operation of sensors
    • LVDTs
    • Potentiometers, encoders, resolvers
    • Tachometers
    • Accelerometers, load cells
  • Non-motion sensors
    • Temperature sensors
    • Level sensors
    • Tilts sensors
  • Characterizing sensors
    • Transfer functions
    • Interpreting data sheets
